Mr Jeremy Russell is one of only a handful of Australian neurosurgeons dual-fellowship trained in both cerebrovascular and skull-base surgery. He manages the full range of general neurosurgical conditions, with particular subspecialty depth in these two demanding areas.
He obtained fellowships in both areas at the Toronto Western Hospital, Canada, over a period of two years under world-renowned neurosurgeons Professor Michael Tymianski and Professor Fred Gentili respectively — making him one of only a handful of Australian neurosurgeons dual-fellowship trained in these complementary subspecialties.
Having developed an extensive practice treating trigeminal neuralgia, Mr Russell now manages over 100 new trigeminal patients a year, offering a comprehensive review and treatment program across all facets of its management. He performs microvascular decompression and percutaneous procedures for the condition, and has sat on the Trigeminal Neuralgia Association Australia medical advisory panel since 2018.
He heads the cerebrovascular service at the Austin Hospital, leading fortnightly meetings where all cerebrovascular cases — aneurysms, AVMs, dAVFs, cavernomas, and bypass for moyamoya disease — are discussed. He uses state-of-the-art intraoperative technology including computer-assisted navigation, angiography, endoscopy, and neurophysiological monitoring when needed to help reduce potential risk to patients.
Philosophy of care
Mr Russell’s guiding principle is to avoid surgical intervention where possible. When surgery is necessary, he believes a collaborative approach to patient care is imperative, working alongside a broad range of specialists so that every patient receives a tailored, holistic solution to their brain or spinal condition. He takes pride in spending time explaining all issues, ensuring patients leave every consultation with a thorough understanding of their condition and treatment plan. Following every consultation, he also sends each patient a copy of their letter — so the explanation given in person is there in writing to revisit at home and share with family.
