For Patients

Your telehealth appointment

A simple, step-by-step guide to your video consultation on Zoom — no technical experience needed.
Mr Russell’s telehealth consultations are held over Zoom, a free and widely used video-calling program. Many patients have never used it before — that is completely fine. This page walks you through everything, and if anything goes wrong on the day, the rooms will simply call you.
What you’ll need
  • A smartphone, tablet or computer with a working camera and microphone
  • A reliable internet or mobile-data connection
  • A quiet, private, well-lit room where you can talk freely
  • Your current referral, a list of your medications, and any recent scans or results to hand
1
Download Zoom before the day Install Zoom ahead of time so you’re not rushing. You do not need to create an account or pay anything.
2

Test your camera and microphone
A day or two before, open Zoom’s free test meeting. It lets you check your camera, microphone and speakers are working — no one else is on the call.

3
Join on the day The rooms will send you a Zoom link by email or SMS. A few minutes before your appointment, tap or click that link. When your device asks, choose to allow camera and microphone access, then join with video and join with audio.
4
Wait to be admitted You may see a “waiting room” screen — that’s normal. Mr Russell will admit you when he’s ready, just like being called in from a waiting room.
A few tips for a smooth consultation
  • Sit somewhere quiet and private with the light in front of you, not behind you
  • Headphones or earphones often make it easier to hear
  • Charge your device, or keep it plugged in
  • Close other apps and, on a phone, prop it up so your hands are free
  • Have a phone within reach in case we need to call you
If something goes wrong

Don’t worry — technical hiccups are common and easily solved. If you can’t connect, can’t be heard, or the call drops out, stay where you are and keep your phone nearby: the rooms will telephone you to sort it out or continue by phone. You can always reach us on (03) 9981 9588.
