Chiari Malformation

The posterior balance brain sitting too low through the skull base — often manageable, sometimes surgical.
In brief
  • The lower part of the brain extends below the base of the skull
  • May cause headaches (worse with straining), neck pain or balance issues
  • Can be associated with a fluid cavity in the spinal cord (syrinx)
  • Diagnosed on MRI of the brain and spine
  • Treated by monitoring, or surgery to decompress the area when symptomatic
A detailed information sheet on Chiari Malformation is currently being prepared. In the meantime, Mr Russell welcomes the opportunity to discuss your diagnosis and treatment options with you.
